TiVo Series 2 doesn't, but apparently it does store the captions in a separate data stream, rather than just recording line 21 (since that might not survive the MPEG encoding process), and regenerates line 21 on playback. So if there's a standard for including captions or subtitles in an MP4 container, it would make sense if the TiVo (S3 only, though) could handle that in the same way - I believe this is what txporter was getting at. Unfortunately I have yet to see the TiVo render any captions from an MP4, but then again I'm not certain that any of the ones I've tried have had any.

Not sure if you are following the discussion we are having over on TCF, but if you are interested, I have some clips up on my Tonidoplug that you could download and play with. More details there. Its an interesting alternative, although it suffers from two major flaws from my perspective. 1) As mentioned, it works only the Series 3. And 2) You're going to lose the subtitle styling, fonts, placement and overlay signs from your original video source. In some genres (e.g., anime), people consider the subtitle styling, placement and font selection to be as important as the translation or the video & audio quality. Further, overlay signs from SSA subtitles can give in-place translations without disrupting the visual scene composition.
Buy Episode 3 HD $2.99. Format, Prime Video (streaming online video). Then the major bad guy is bulimic etc and has lots of cool menacing moments - but. So while rendering the subtitle track as closed captioning might give you the words on screen, it would presumably come with a major sacrifice in legibility, content, and aesthetics. The setup in my guide was designed specifically to preserve the full effect of SSA styled subs used in today's quality anime releases. All that being said, more options are better than fewer options. Hopefully txporter will keep us updated if he finds an alternative path to rendering softsubs on his TiVo. I was just asking if you had tried it because I have not.
I personally hardcode subtitles using avisynth and HCenc to upload to my Tivo. I would like to move to x264 encoding (mostly for space savings), but there is particular issue with h.264 playback that I am trying to work through. The issue is most obvious with static images (burned in subs show the problem very readily), so I was wondering if I could avoid this by relying on the Tivo to render the subs rather than burning them in. It's not a big deal. I have read the docs on mp4box and mux'd some samples together to try out at home. Maybe I will get lucky.but I kinda doubt it.

There's just too many possible issues; I think you've now got a codec problem, but it could also be any one of the other problems arising again. I'd just be guessing at this point. Thanks for the help regardless.
I'm going to try to set things up from my laptop and see if I have the same problem. I followed it and the subtitles work when I play them with Windows Media Player 9 and DirectVobSub. When I right click the AVS file and select Play it plays in Windows Media Player 6.4 and the subtitles do not show up. The DirectVobSub icon still shows up though. I can see subtitles if I turn them on in FFDshow Video Decoder and it works on the TiVo too, but the text is smaller and almost unreadable compared to DirectVobSub.
I could try playing around with the font settings to get it to match, but I was wondering why DirectVobSub isn't working on 6.4 and in essence not working on my TiVo. Also, when right-clicking the DirectVobSub icon in the tray I see more options listed when playing it in WMP 9 than I do in WMP 6.4. I don't use any of the Windows media players, so I can't help you with them. They shouldn't have anything to do with getting the subtitles to show on your tivo. Indeed, it sounds like the guide is working as intended - you can see the subtitles on the tivo. If the subtitles aren't styled to your liking, try using the options in directvobsub. What matters is the AVS script. When I play the MKV file in WMP, DirectVobSub shows the subtitles just fine.
When I play the AVS script in WMP the subtitles do not show up. After some more playing around if I add the path to the subtitles file in DirectVobSub settings I can get that one video to display subtitles. Since I have files in many different folders it's unfeasible to add the paths to all of the folders. So I guess my problem is that when using Avisynth the relative path to the subtitle isn't working. Does that make any sense?
EDIT: I think I'm getting somewhere. I can get one file to play the subtitles, but not the other. When the subtitles work correctly I see 2 DirectVobSub tray icons in addition to the 2 ffdshow video icons, 2 haali media splitter icons, and 1 ffdshow audio icon. On the file that doesn't play subtitles there is only one DirectVobSub icon shown. The options on the 2 DirectVobSub icons differ.
One has extra items: Subtitle (embeded), V:English, A:English, S:English, No Subtitles When I play the MKV file that's not working there isn't an S:English option, but subtitles still play in WMP. I'm thinking I need that S:English option for the subtitles to pass through Avisynth when I play the AVS file. That's the only thing I can think of.

Thanks for the guide. I never wouldn't gotten this far without it. Now to fix the jittery video.

On another matter, I have run into a problem where AVS files that point to a certain group of MKV files do not work.
When I try to transfer them to the TiVo it stops transferring after a couple seconds and shows up in the Now Playing List as a 0 second show. If I transfer the MKV file it transfers just fine. For example: an AVS file that points to pretty.little.liars.s02e03.720p.hdtv.x264-immerse.mkv won't work, but Pretty.Little.Liars.S02E02.720p.HDTV.X264-DIMENSION.mkv will work within an AVS file. According to MediaInfo all of the files with IMMERSE in the filename are written using x264.exe and they never transfer to the TiVo.
The working ones all seem to use mkvmerge as the writing application. The AVS files that won't transfer to the TiVo will play in Windows Media Player so I'm at a loss as to where the problem lies since pyTiVo will transfer the MKV file, but not the AVS file. EDIT: Just wanted to say I got it fixed now.
I read elsewhere to check the sampling frequency using mkvinfo and sure enough it was set to 0. I set it to 48000 and the files now transfer via the AVS files. Hercules67 Joined: 28 Jan 2008 Posts: 8 Posted: Thu May 24, 2012 12:48 am Post subject: Does it really matter what version DirectVobSub is?
In the Guide, which I am trying to follow and adhere to, you list version 2.39? Right now, the version on VideoHelp.com is 2.41, and I have version 2.23 installed. The guide is a bit old now, and I'm not really updating it as new versions come up. Newer versions of DirectVobSub should work, but I've not done any particular testing as updates have been released. Well, I found out the hard way, the spelling (or naming) of the file has to be exact, otherwise the script won't work.
Yes, version 2.41 of DirectVobSub works fine (I hope it does not upset my version of VirtualDub). However, the current mkv file I am trying to transfer with soft-subs does not seem to work.
The subs work fine in VLC. But they do not work in Media Player Classic or transferred through pyTiVo. Strangely, some of the subs, like episode title, or opening karaoke, are hard-subs. Do I need to look somewhere else for a solution?
Or is this a problem with the version, and I really DO NEED 2.39? (it's available at VideoHelp.com). Hercules67 Joined: 28 Jan 2008 Posts: 8 Posted: Thu May 24, 2012 3:29 am Post subject: I downloaded mkvinfo, and I see the subtitle track ('ass') but do I do with it?
